Google is announcing a big rebranding and redesign for its suite of office apps today, rebranding G Suite with a new name: Google Workspace. Along with the new branding for the product that encompasses Gmail, Docs, Meet, Sheets, and Calendar are new features designed to make all those products feel like they’re more integrated with one another. Google is also changing up its pricing tiers just a bit, adding a new “Business Plus” level with more device management features.
As an example of the new features, a Chat window can spawn a new document for everybody in the group without needing a new tab. And in Google Docs, instead of chasing each others’ cursors around or opening up a chat window, you can immediately just start a video call right in the same window for everybody who’s active in the document.
The idea of blowing up the idea of separate apps into little pieces that can be embedded in other places isn’t entirely new — Microsoft has been trying the same thing with its Fluid framework in Office. That Google’s launching similar capabilities in Google Workspace is a sign it may try to get serious about challenging Microsoft. If that’s too vague for you, the press release quote from the VP in charge of Google Workspace, Javier Soltero, is much more explicit: “This is the end of the ‘office’ as we know it.”
Google has already taken some steps in this new direction — the integration of Google Meet into Gmail was a big one. Now, though, Google is hoping to draw in more users with the convenience of fully integrated services that don’t send you looking for another tab. It’s not so much that everything is all going to live inside a Gmail tab on the desktop, but that whatever work surface you happen to be using will be able to include elements from other work surfaces.
Some small examples of this kind of integration will be available beginning today. Google Workspace apps will let users bring up small previews of other documents embedded in the thing they’re working on. Google will also expand the use of “smart chips,” which are little contact cards that can pop up when you @-mention somebody in a document.
The more ambitious features, including creating a doc directly from a Chat window or starting a video call from within a presentation, will be rolling out “in the coming weeks” or “coming months.” As for non-business customers, these changes will be available later than for business users — again, “in the coming months.”
It should also be said that all of this is very desktop-centric, focused on Google’s apps inside web browsers like Chrome (and hopefully others). Beyond the aforementioned (and not universally loved) inclusion of Meet into Gmail, Google’s other mobile apps won’t be this tightly integrated to start.
Finally, Google is changing up the iconography for its Google Workspace apps. I suspect that there will be a worldwide revolt at the idea of changing the Gmail icon from its familiar all-red M to the multicolored one you see at the top of this post — with Calendar a close second for the most jarring change.
Soltero tells me that Google has no intention of reducing support for third-party apps in Google Workspace. If your team uses a mix of Google services, Slack, Asana, Zoom, or whatever else, nothing should change there. But the new integrations and promise of less tab-hopping shows that Google is hoping that more of its users will start using more of its products instead of the alternative.
As for Microsoft, these changes are unlikely to knock Office off its perch anytime soon. Think of these updates as a statement of intent more than a frontal assault. G Suite (now Google Workspace) has seen faster and more substantial updates in Soltero’s first year in charge than it had in several years prior. It sure looks like Google is putting in resources and is gearing up to have that fight with Office.
Facebook promised that it would make messaging easier across all of its apps (Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp) last year, and we've already seen evidence that the company was working on integrating Facebook Messenger with Instagram. Today, the company has made that move official, introducing what it's calling a new Messenger experience on Instagram.
We already reported on the integration when it was part of a limited test, and not too much has changed: Once the new chat experience has rolled out to you, you'll notice that the flyer icon in the top right corner of the Instagram app has been switched out for the Facebook Messenger symbol. Tap it, and you'll be greeted by a prompt asking you if you'd like to upgrade your messaging experience. It's possible to postpone the switch in the beginning, but at some point, you'll be forced to use the new Instagram messenger with its redesigned chats and new features. Specifically, the new UI will introduce ephemeral messages, Watch Together for IGTV, selfie stickers, and more:
Communicate Across Apps: Seamlessly connect with friends and family across Instagram and Messenger by using either app to send messages and join video calls.
Watch Together: Enjoy watching videos on Facebook Watch, IGTV, Reels (coming soon!), TV shows, movies, and more with friends and family during a video call.
Vanish Mode: Choose a mode where seen messages disappear after they’re seen or when you close the chat.
Selfie Stickers: Create a series of boomerang stickers with your selfie to use in conversation.
Chat Colors: Personalize your chats with fun color gradients.
Custom Emoji Reactions: Create a shortcut of your favorite emojis to react quickly to messages from friends.
Forwarding: Easily share great content with up to five friends or groups.
Replies: Respond directly to a specific message in your chat and keep the conversation flowing.
Animated Message Effects: Add visual flair to your message with animated send effects.
Message Controls: Decide who can message you directly, and who can’t message you at all.
Enhanced Reporting and Blocking Updates: Now you can report full conversations in addition to single messages on Instagram, and receive proactive blocking suggestions across Instagram and Messenger when you add your accounts in the new Accounts Center.
To be clear, the update won't force you to download the Messenger, and it also doesn't put a 1:1 Messenger clone into Instagram. Instagram DMs are still separate, but they've inherited a lot of features and looks from Messenger. Facebook writes: "The main change is that people using the Messenger app can now reach you on Instagram without you needing to download a new app, and vice versa."
Facebook has also revamped the privacy controls in Instagram and Messenger to accommodate the new cross-platform compatibility. You'll be able to choose who can contact you on which platform, and ask Facebook to block certain requests automatically, such as from strangers or friends of friends. Facebook has additionally specified that you don't need a Facebook account to talk to Messenger users on Instagram and vice versa.
The new messaging experience in Instagram is currently rolling out as part of a server-side switch, so it might take some time until the integration hits your account. It still makes sense to stay up to date with Instagram and Facebook Messenger as that might help you get the update faster — check the Play Store for updates, or get the latest release from APK Mirror (Instagram, Facebook Messenger).

Kotlin is now Google’s preferred language for Android app development
Google today announced that the Kotlinprogramming language is now its preferred language for Android app developers.
“Android development will become increasingly Kotlin-first,” Google writes in today’s announcement. “Many new Jetpack APIs and features will be offered first in Kotlin. If you’re starting a new project, you should write it in Kotlin; code written in Kotlin often mean much less code for you–less code to type, test, and maintain.”
It was only two years ago, at I/O 2017, that Google announced support for Kotlin in its Android Studio IDE. That came as a bit of a surprise, given that Java had long been the preferred language for Android app development, but few announcements at that year’s I/O got more applause. Over the course of the last two years, Kotlin’s popularity has only increased. More than 50% of professional Android developers now use the language to develop their apps, Google says, and in the latest Stack Overflow developer survey, it ranks as the fourth-most loved programming language.
With that, it makes sense for Google to increase its Kotlin support. “We’re announcing that the next big step that we’re taking is that we’re going Kotlin-first,” Chet Haase, chief advocate for Android, said.
“We understand that not everybody is on Kotlin right now, but we believe that you should get there,” Haase said. “There may be valid reasons for you to still be using the C++ and Java programming languages and that’s totally fine. These are not going away.”
GlobeTelecom has announced that they will launch the 5G first in the Philippines this coming June in 2019. With a promise of 100 Mbps speed, Globe will first roll out the 5G on select areas particularly for home broadband service only while mobile 5G for smartphones to follow.
Although the marketed speed is below the average speed of most 5G networks globally, the latency and reliability will be greatly improved over 3G and 4G LTE.
According to its CEO, Mr. Ernest L. Cu said that enterprises will also benefit on 5G availability as IoT or Internet of Things will be supported. This will make the management of their businesses smarter and safer.
On the other hand, Globe is targetting by the end of this year to launch the 5G Mobile Network for more consumers. SMART-PLDT is also expected to roll out their 5G network by this year but with no definite launch date.
Mislatel Consortium was selected as the 3rd major telco in the Philippines will start their operation by this year also but it focuses on 3G and 4G as well as broadband services for enterprises.
